Why Men SHOUT!

Joshua 6:15-17, 20 NASB

15 Then on the seventh day they rose early at the dawning of the day and marched around the city in the same manner seven times; only on that day they marched around the city seven times. 16 At the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout! For the LORD has given you the city. 17 The city shall be under the ban, it and all that is in it belongs to the LORD;...20 So the people shouted, and priests blew the trumpets; and when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted with a great shout and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight ahead, and they took the city.

In verse 16, Joshua commanded the Israelites to SHOUT! when they had circled the city the seventh time and when they did the walls came down. In the same way men build up walls from within. These walls prevent anyone from coming in, our wives, our children, our families, church and most importantly, Christ. These walls must come down in order for men to become what God intended for us to be in the beginning. These walls not only prevent things from getting in but also from getting out - the thing that society says a man is. The streets have taught us to live a lie. We, as men, have believed a lot of junk that is in our hearts and minds.

Look to the Creator for What a Man Should Be

Instead of looking to another man to see what a man should be, why not look to The One that created man. I often ask men this question, “Would you take your Cadillac to a Volkswagen dealer for repair, would you?” I think not! Then why do we seek understanding of what a man should be from someone who is just as messed up as I am? God created man in His own image, not in the image of man. With this in mind, men need to SHOUT! And get it all out! Turn their hearts back to their heavenly Father, so He can heal them from all the hurt and pain and misinformation that they have received from the streets over a life-time.

It All Begins in Childhood

I believe that many of our problems began in our childhood, when we fell down and skinned our knee on the playground and some “man” said, “Buck up, men don’t cry!” That’s where it all started. You began to hold your emotions in for fear of someone calling you a punk or a sissy or worse, the wall was being built, and you didn’t even realize it. As you got older, you meet a young lady that you want to call your wife, and you go to your Pastor for counseling before marriage, he says to you that one of the most important things in a marriage is to communicate…BAM! There it is. All of your life you have been doing the very opposite, keeping it all inside, not communicating.

I pray that as you look back over your life, look closely for things that you may have suppressed. This could be the cause of some of your problems. Then begin to SHOUT! and get it all out!

God Bless you and yours,

Keith Jackson
